One of the most common questions we get here at Portland Paddle is whether kids can come paddling with us. We love introducing children to the joys of paddling, and have developed a number of programs in order to do just that, such as Family Tours, Paddle Camp, and take away rentals, which allow paddling at more sheltered waters than our coastal bases. In order to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment, different Portland Paddle services have different minimum age requirements. All the details are laid out below. For answers to other frequently asked questions, please see our FAQ page.
Only children ages 7 and up can paddle with Portland Paddle. We also have additional age restrictions that apply to certain experiences. Please see below.
Ages 0-6: Cannot paddle with us due to equipment limitations and other safety considerations.
Ages 7 and up: May join Family Tour, Presumpscot River Tour, tandem kayak rentals with an adult, SUP shared with an adult, youth kayak rentals (at Crescent Beach) accompanied by a renting adult, or Paddle Camp.
Ages 10 and up: May also join Fort Gorges Tour and Sunset Tour, sharing a tandem kayak with an adult.
Ages 12 and up: May also join Half Day Tour, Moonlight Paddle, and multi-day tours. May paddle their own rental boat, accompanied by a renting adult.
Ages 14 and up: May also join SUP tours, accompanied by an adult.
Ages 16-18: May join any of our tours, lessons or rentals on their own, with a liability waiver signed by a parent and/or guardian.
Any child under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult on the water.
In general, kayaking on protected lakes and rivers is often a better option than paddling on the ocean if you have very young children. Safety is our top priority and we are always especially cautious and conservative when it comes to sending young children onto the ocean. For suggestions on places to paddle with young kids, feel free to give us a call, or check out our blog post on the subject.
