Join us for a sea kayaking expedition across Casco Bay for three days and two nights! Camp on the islands of the Maine Island Trail and experience the diverse environments found in the bay
Quick Details
This trip offers a chance to experience the joys of kayak camping in the gorgeous and rugged islands of Casco Bay. Some of our favorite campsites on the Maine Island Trail are found in this bay, along with abundant wildlife, fascinating historical landmarks, pristine beaches, wave-battered headlands and sheltered coves. The exact destination is determined by the sea and weather conditions, but we often head to wild Jewell Island, with its gorgeous vistas and extensive network of hiking trails. Other popular island destinations include Little Chebeague, Whaleboat Island, Bangs Island or the Goslings.
Prior experience with sea kayak camping is not required for this trip, so it’s a great way to to get a taste of sea kayak touring on the Maine Island Trail. However, we do require participants to have some prior sea kayaking experience and comfort with tent camping.
The group will start by island-hopping from the populated inner islands to the wild islands on the edge of the open ocean. Along the way you’ll land on a few beaches for breaks. Each day’s paddle may cover anywhere from 5 to 12 miles, depending on the weather and the group, and the group will move at a moderate pace.
We provide three delicious meals(dinner, breakfast, and lunch) with plentiful snacks for this trip dinner. However, we ask that you bring along your own lunch for the first day of the trip.
Portland Paddle provides an expert guide, all the kayaking gear and dry bags you’ll need, drinking water, and camping and cooking gear. Many clients bring their own tent, but rentals are available at no additional cost. We can provide sleeping bags and sleeping pads for an additional fee. Cold water paddling gear such as wetsuits and neoprene booties are available for rent. The group meets at 8:30 AM on the first day and aims to return by 4:00 PM the second day.
If you would prefer to book a private trip that is just for your group we would be happy to make that happen. A private trip allows your guide to customize the itinerary to fit the interests and experience levels of those in your group. It’s also a good option if the dates of our public trips listed on the calendar above don’t work for your group.
